In addition to being a vehicle for major allegorical and dramatic spectacles that had obvious political undertones, the court ballet could also serve lighter purposes.
By its descriptive aspect, this piece, which is a fragment from a comic masquerade danced in 1603, suggests the level of whimsy that could be deployed during Carnaval – a special time for court ballets.
