Henri IV - An unfinished reign

The funeral of Henri IV

"The king is dead, long live the king!" According to an age-old French saying, "death seizes the living". As a consequence, kings never die, and Louis XIII , who was only nine years old, acceded to the throne. In order to ensure the continuity of the monarchy and invest young Louis with full sovereignty, the duc d’Épernon appeared before the Parlement de Paris barely one hour after the assassination to register the regency of Marie de Médicis – exactly as Henri IV had himself foreseen.
