Henri IV - An unfinished reign

A national legend (20th century)

With few exceptions, the figure of Henri IV passed unimpeded through the 20th century. During this period, he became a genuine national legend, possessing values and a modernity that needed to be brought up to date. The king's many-faceted character and his extraordinary pliability meant that he could be referred to at a number of very different moments during the century, from the First and Second World Wars to the Fifth Republic.
